1095 is a high carbon steel that is considered by many to be ideal for knifemaking.  This user-friendly steel is excellent for forging, grinding and sharpening with great edge retention.  This steel has a Rockwell hardness of 55-58 HRC which makes it a good steel for outdoor activities without chipping or breaking.  Because of this hardness, 1095 is widely used in all kinds of edged weaponry and works best when forging longer, thicker blades.  It is also a great addition to your Damascus billet.
